Lost in Translation
Ever have one of those coaching moments where something just gets lost in the translation between coach and athlete?

Whack-a-Gymnast
Staying tight and focused:
This was my favorite ball, until I pumped too much air into it and it exploded. I guess it's still my favorite, but it leaks air and no longer has its cloth covering. I think the product is no longer available. It's a shame because it was a great beach ball that I could attach Velcro to, for other drills.
When deflated at the right amount, the ball really does make a great booming sound when it impacts.

Stinky Roundoffs
Our level 5s who just got done with compulsory season are going to try and jump right into the optional season as new 7s. They aren't entirely ready and are still acquiring skills (*cough*giants*cough*); but they've definitely come a long way in a short time.
Last Saturday one of their return stations was round-off slams. We once worked with putting a whoopie cushion up as a target a long time ago. Decided to pull it back out and use it (I bought three of these, with two still functional).
I think the rec parents in the bleachers were greatly entertained.

Iconic Chris Pratt Jurassic Pose
I've not seen any of the Jurassic movies (yet); but I did read about a meme taking shape:
Since the release of Jurassic World the raptor training pose has become a sensation, with people all over the world taking up the challenge to copy the look and post the results to social media,
That's my Gym-rassic pose.
Who says this ol' fossil ain't hip and up-to-date on trending pop culture?

"Open the pod bay doors, please SAL."
Instead of a stopwatch, I've been using the timer on my phone by voice command, during practice. The level 3s love it, during timed warm-ups and timed challenges. At the end of the countdown, instead of your typical alarm, I use customized ringtones with geeky soundclips (such as the computer voice from Star Trek with red alert warning to abandon ship or somesuch).
Today, I was timing the girls for a 30 second handstand-shaping hold against the wall for part of vault warm-up. I told Siri to launch timer; and set for 30 seconds. And this was her reply back. Hadn't heard that one before and neither had the girls. They nearly fell down from their handstands from laughing so much.

Beware of Foam Pit on Your Six O'Clock!
Situational Awareness= "The ability to take in the information surrounding you; analysis, and interpret that information and act accordingly to the current situation for the sake of your own safety. It involves being aware of what is happening in the immediate vicinity, all around you."
Here I demonstrate a great example of what happens when you lack sufficient situational awareness.

That's not my name
Coach David has been the primary coach for the level 4s since May or
June. He's with them for most rotations. These days I get called
"Coach David" by many of the girls before they catch themselves. Last
week, I also got called "Coach Stella". And also last week, one of the
level 3s accidentally called me "Mommy".

Your wish is granted
If you haven't seen it yet, first, go watch the Jubilee Project video and look for my gymnast, Scarlet.
That video was posted on Oct 29, 2014. When I linked to it here on Nov 4th, it had almost a million views. It is now up to over 4 million!
Scarlet: "If I could have teleportation in my body."
