Piked handstand one-arm weight transfer drill/exercise

5-17-2014

Why not against a wall in an actual handstand?  There is no viable wall space by the bars area.  So drills are built and adapted to what we have at our disposal.

The inclined boards are primarily used for beginner leg ups; but I also like them for handstanding, handstand push-ups, and planching drills- similar to using walls or blocks to put the feet against or on top of.

Plus, this kid is only a level 3/4 and the piked handstand is good for maintaining upper body alignment and reducing some of the weight-load, until she gets stronger.

Pirouetting in 1/4 Turns

Last week, I played with creating a new side station for bar rotation.

I've seen Enrique Trabanino use push-up bars (I call the mini p-bars pirouelettes, but others call push-up bars pirouelettes) before for the assist in 1/4-turn phases of working bar pirouettes.  Since the 8 inch mat was there, I thought leaning a push-up bar against it at angle might feel more comfortable and keep the weight distribution more concentrated on the posting arm.'''

Are you a candidate for el-grip giants?

Tom Forster shows the position he's looking for in this el-grip handstand drill

In men's gymnastics, it's a must for every high bar worker to develop el-grip giants.  It's required in the upper levels.

For the girls, not so much.

Here is Tom Forster at the 2010 GAT Convention showing how he tests out kids on whether or not it's worth the time-investment to put them on a track for acquiring el-grip giants:

And now for something difficult: Backward Rolls

Backward rolls for giants:

Clinic given by Coach Wade in April of 2011:

Can you see now why the backward rolls in compulsories are nitpicked?
Starting at 1:19, you can see how this is being drilled for barwork (love the stalder drills!):
